The city of Catania boasts a splendid historic centre, protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Its architectural marvels, but also the liveliness of the popular markets, the wild beauty of Etna and the clear sea of the coast will win you over.
The Cathedral of Sant'Agata (the patron saint of the city), the Bellini Theater, the popular markets, via Etnea, the splendid Benedictine Monastery (seat of the University's Department of Human Sciences) and Etna are just some of the marvels of this city.
Obviously, it is impossible to leave out the culinary delicacies of the Catania tradition, such as arancini (yes, here they are called masculine!), iris (fried or baked stuffed bombs), Sant'Agata olives and brioche with granita . Must try all!
And for lovers of grilled horse meat, a symbol of Catania's gastronomic tradition, an obligatory stop is via del Plebiscito, a street in the historic center flooded with the unmistakable scent of ever-burning embers.
Another unmissable stop just outside Catania is the coast, and in particular the gulf of Acitrezza, an enchanting location which with its stacks was chosen by Giovanni Verga as the setting for his most famous novel, "I Malavoglia".
Catania Fontanarossa Airport is less than 15 minutes away by car.
